Vessel-Twenty One pilots, Part 1, Ode to sleep.
I wake up fine and dandy,...
Good morning, 2018! I'm super bored, and I've also wanted to do this for a while, so here we go.
1. Ode to sleepThis song is quite the start to the album. It's a mix of every type of music, starting with a rock/fast "rap" section. I never did a words to second count, but I know it was pretty fast, and flows in a weird way. Then, the song starts to slow down, then leads into a happy little pop section, (no Bob Ross puns intended) that's actually quite upbeat, but it also is Tyler saying how he gets scared of his demons that haunt him at night, but also is telling them that his is "Insignificant. What does it do for you to harass me?" Then, it starts slowing down again, and reverts back into the dark rock/rap section, like the first, but probably one of the fastest words per second section in almost any song, to my count, it's 72 words in about 12 seconds, (for those of you that don't have a calculator, or too lazy to calculate, it's 6 words a second.) I am pretty certain there are faster sections in other songs, since a lot of the words are single syllable words, but it's definitely too fast for me. I can't quite get the speed to do it. Last part of this section, he is saying how he isn't free, "I'm not free, I asked forgiveness three times, same amount that I denied, I three time MVPed this crime." (This is probably a reference to St. Peter from the bible, he said virtually the same thing from the end of the Gospel of John.) Then he says "Metaphorically, I'm a whore, and that's denial number four." What this means to me, a person who regularly struggles with depression and anxiety, it means that I think very low of myself, (which I do) but I know I'm also my own biggest critic, that I'm actually not as bad as I think, and my own self esteem is the biggest problem. Then lastly, the outro which is similar to the middle happy little pop section in the middle, (shameless Bob Ross quote, I know). Ok, it's not similar, it's the same. It's a happy ending to the song though, so it does kind of show (at least to me) how he slowly takes charge of the self depreciation/depression/whatever it is, to try and take it more optimistically, (if that is a word.)
AYE! I love this song so, so much. I love every song Twenty One Pilots has done, though. If I could give some ones that are more about God for me (though the two guys in TOP are Christians) it would be; Addict With A Pen, Holding Onto You, Fall Away, and Drown.
ReplyDeleteAlso, the singer did a few Christian songs with another band and I like them so here's those if you wanna hear them! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xx6t0PSj9Eg
Sorry for the bombard comment - but yeah, like you said... Ode To Sleep is one intense song. For me, it is definitely about fighting demons and not sleeping - which leads to the Scriptures talking about in the end days we must stay awake... and the verses about God giving us rest... so I love this song.
God bless!
