Twenty One Pilots album rankings, (minus regional at best)

Twenty One Pilots, the band out of Ohio that has made such fan favorites such at Stressed Out, Car radio, and Jumpsuit, just to name a few. Today I will attempt to rank the 4 albums they have released into the world, (I know, there's 5 albums, but regional at best is no where to be found on most places except you tube) and explaining my reasons as to why each album falls where it does. The main reason I will not be including Regional at best is, to be completely honest, because I haven't listened to it through more than once since I would have to listen to it off of you tube. Just like any list, this will be biased, this will be my opinion, if you don't agree feel free to express your opinions. Without further ado, let's get into this!

4: Self titled/Twenty One Pilots
While this album is still great, and it's still a great album to look back to, I will have to give it the less than coveted bottom spot. This album has plenty of positives, the main reason I think this album would be on the bottom is because it's production is a lot lower than the rest of their albums. It's not without redeeming qualities though, I find this album comes across much more heartfelt than any of their albums, minus a couple songs on future albums. Isle of Flightless birds is still an amazing song that holds up even today with their better production, Johnny Boy sounds great to me still, though they have definitely had catchier songs on later albums, and the emotion on Addict with a Pen and A car, A torch, A Death are unparalleled on any of their other albums. Honestly, not many of these songs, if any, are objectively bad songs, but I find myself coming back to this album least of any of their albums.

3: Vessel
With the drummer and the lead singer's grandfather's on the cover, the album may just seem like any other album out there, but let me tell you that it's not, this album was a beginning of an amazing band. With everything I've said about this album, how could I possibly put two albums above this? The main reason I had to put this lower than the other two albums is because I don't think the second half of this album can hold up to the quality of the second half of the other two albums. Not to say trees or Guns for Hands are bad songs, (Still some of my favorite songs in their catalog) but the run and go, Fake you out, and truce all (to me at least) all seemed like weaker songs in their catalog. That being said, the opening half of this album is absolute fire. Ode to Sleep is one of the deepest songs I've ever heard and also has some of Tyler Joseph's best rapping anywhere. Holding on to you is still a fan favorite, and for good reason with such smooth transitions and good songwriting. Migraine is still my favorite song on the album to this day, and Car Radio has been such a big song, with fans of the band and with those who aren't.

2: Blurryface
With a pretty decent sized fan base after Vessel, expectations were high for the band. If you've listened to the radio at all, or followed the band even a little, you should know that this album could've very well surpassed the very high expectations that was held for it. From start to finish, this album is nearly perfect, with just a couple spots that I could possibly call misfires. Heavydirtysoul and Lane boy do great jobs of showing off Tyler's rapping and Josh's drumming, Stressed Out, The Judge, and Not Today do a very good job of showing off Tyler's unconventional songwriting, and each of the songs on their own I think flow really well as an album, as well as on their own. The only songs I don't enjoy quite so much on the album would be Goner and the opening track, Heavydirtysoyl. Goner to me seemed like just slightly too much of a contrast between the dark and light that they had going in the album, and I personally don't like the sound of the first song all that much, I think the bridge is a little weak and the song isn't as deep as I have come to love from Twenty One Pilots. That being said, I still think that these songs are good songs, I just think that they are a little short in some places.

1: Trench
After a monster of a successful album in Blurryface, Twenty One Pilots had high expectations to meet when they "announced" their next album, and I believe if they were to do anything with this album, this was the way to go. A much less mainstream sound than their last album, this album is a lot more focused on the sound of the instrumentals than blurryface had been. Leading off with the song Jumpsuit, which was also the first song released for the album, it's quite a popular song, especially among fans. Next leads into another of the prereleased singles, levitate, and from there on, the album just gets better and better for me. With upbeat and peppy songs like Levitate and My Blood, with happy sounding melancholy songs like Chlorine and Jumpsuit, or the standard melancholy sounding songs like Neon Gravestones and Leave the City, this album is everything I wanted from their newest album and more. It really surprised me with how well he was able to write some of these songs, some of the songs being unrivaled by any of their other songs in the songwriting category. While this album is objectively a lesser album to blurryface, I personally much prefer this album and I think this album will stick with me for years to come.

Not much more can be said about this band. I obviously love this band, and not many other bands can I say I love every single one of their albums. While I definitely have my own personal opinions, and consequently personal bias, I do think that this band has quite a catalog and will continue to impress me for years to come. I know there are plenty of people who swear by any of the albums, don't be offended if Trench is not your favorite, or if Self titled isn't your least. This is all my opinion on the band, and the albums, and if your opinion is different, that's to be expected.

Disclaimer: I know that Tyler Joseph had made a solo project and had written No Phun Intended. I purposely chose to not include that for a couple reasons, A) being that it's a solo project and Josh Dun (the drummer) is still part of the band, and B) the solo project isn't the same type of material as Twenty One Pilots is used to releasing, so it would definitely be a black sheep if I were to include it.
